Hey folks,

My colleagues in Socorro, NM (home of the Very Large Array) are running a big hamfest. They’re inviting SARA to do demonstrations and there will be optical scopes set up. Might someone from HamSCI be interested in participating? Contact Tess Anderson, KJ5DCM. Tand...@nrao.edu

How large an event is the NRAO Hamfest?  Is it worth
driving perhaps 1500 miles round trip?

Thanks,

It is definitely not worth that drive, Dana!  I usually attend because of my position as NM SM.  It is similar in size to local (Albuquerque) tailgates.  It is essentially an enclosed tailgate with a few presentations/meetings, typically about 100 or less in attendance.  I hope to attend but cannot predict that now since I will be recovering from total knee replacement surgery eight days earlier.

What fun can there be in a hamfest in a Radio Quiet zone?

Terry, the VLA is some 30 or so miles west of Socorro, N. M.  I doubt the town is included in the RQZ.

The National Radio Quiet Zone is only the West Virginia NRAO facility (Green Bank). The VLA, an hour west of Socorro, just respectfully asks that you don't have radios in the vicinity. The town of Socorro is far enough away that there's no issue. There are many hams in that area including employees of NRAO :)

Do any of you happen to know Denis Urbain, with whom
I worked while we were both at Arecibo.  He left Arecibo
way back when in favor of an offer from VLA, but I've not
been in touch with him for over 10 years now.  I wonder
if he is still at VLA, and seek contact info for him.

The factors which attracted me to the Socorro fest are the
connections with VLA and the talks by SARA folks.  I figured
that the swap by itself would probably not be worth the trouble.

Thanks,

Dana

Terry,
The NRQZ of the US is NRAO, but in West Virginia.
We had great Hamfests here in Puerto Rico a few miles from the Arecibo Observatory, although here we have a Coordination Zone not a quiet zone.
